Maintaining Hygiene: How to Clean Your Mattress

Share

Did you know your mattress can double in weight over the course of 10 years? Through the build-up of sweat, dead skin cells, and other material, much is stored within your mattress that is not visible to the naked eye. Aside from waste products produced by our bodies, mattresses can also hold millions of microscopic critters like dust mites! From the odour causing allergens to the other debris on its surface, the list of reasons that justify the need for a thorough clean-up is endless. As much as many might assume that cleaning a mattress is a chore, it is easier than you might think. Capable of ensuring your mattress lasts for years and freshening it up in a jiffy, we cover the various ways to clean your mattress so that it is pleasantly scented and ready for snoozing.

1. Wash All The Bedding

Probably one of the easiest steps to take is to strip your mattress of its sheets, cases, protectors and any other layers on your bed, and give them a good wash. As effortless as this can be, many attempt to stretch this process out, and wash their sheets once a month. However, doing so can affect your health and sleep quality, as it contributes to allergies and breathing difficulties for those suffering from asthma. So, how often should you wash your sheets? Ideally, once a week. This frequency should increase if you have pets and allow them on your bed – changing the sheets once every 3 to 4 days is highly recommended in such cases. When it comes to other bedding such as your comforters, blankets, and pillows, specific care is also necessary once every 3 to 4 months.

2. Vacuum Your Mattress

Every 6 months or so, you’ll also want to vacuum your mattress. Using a High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter and an upholstery attachment, run your vacuum through the entire surface area of the mattress. Why HEPA? This type of air filter, in theory, can remove more than 99% of dust, mould, and any other airborne particles with efficiency. Since smaller particles can be trapped within the crevices, you’ll want to give special attention to the seams of the bedding too. As a matter of fact, these are the areas that have the most hidden dirt or dust and are even favourable breeding spots for bed bugs.

3. Protect Your Mattress

You might have heard of bed sheets, pillowcases, and other aesthetically pleasing toppers that will have your bedroom looking all fancy. But to further protect your mattress and keep it as clean as possible, encase your clean and fresh bed with a protector.

Easily accessible online or in-store bedding stores, these protectors will make cleaning your beds, pillows, and bolsters as simple as possible. Had a late-night snack on your bed and spilled drinks on it? Fret not! The protector will act as a barrier and keep it clean from as many unpleasantries as possible.

4. Use Fitted Sheets

To further protect your mattress from moisture getting into it, prevent the growth of mould, and to keep the dust out, wrap your beds in a fitted sheet. A sheet that encases the entire surface and is fitted completely to cover the bottom seems will make sure minimal dust mites take up residence on the mattress. Anything that does get built up will remain on your sheet, which can then be washed easily – you wouldn’t want to wash your entire mattress, would you?

5. Rotate Your Mattress

Even though flipping your mattresses is more so for reducing wear and tear, and maintaining their structural integrity, it can also help with cleanliness. Instead of having all the bacteria, sweat, and body oils accumulate and build up in one confined area, flipping your mattresses every 3 months will mitigate the risk of staining and odours. Does your mattress come with a specialised top layer, like the micro-spring plush topper seen in the Nightingale range of mattresses here at Cellini? Not to worry! You can rotate your mattress 180° and achieve the same results.

6. Invest In A Quality Mattress

Buying any ordinary mattress simply because it’s cheap, will not help in keeping them clean and lasting for years to come. Driven by innovation, the smart fabric technology utilised in our Nightingale luxury range ensures you get quality and blissful sleep every night. Helping get rid of various types of microorganisms and offer fresh fabric for daily respite, the VIROCLEAN non-migrating antimicrobial technology reduces viral activity and prevents contamination. Our Silver Fresh, pure non-toxic fibres are also naturally antimicrobial and eliminate any odour causing allergens. Add to that the Sanitized antimicrobial treatment integrated into our fabric and you’ll easily notice the benefits of buying a mattress that prevents the development and the growth of allergens.
